I recently visited my local theatre, Scunthorpe Baths Hall, to watch The Meat Loaf Story, not having any expectations other than I was going to see a tribute band. Having been a big fan for many years, and having seen Meat Loaf live several times, I couldn’t have been more wrong!

This was no tribute band; this was a full-on rock show, the quality of which you would expect to see on London’s West End with lighting and sound to match Meat Loaf himself.
The musicians nailed every song to perfection and performed and interacted with the rest of the cast and audience the whole night. The cast were all amazing vocally and the dance routines were equally as good. Steve Steinman is a man with the task of bringing these massive songs to life and he does it with ease and passion. He has his own way of interacting with the audience and had me laughing out loud on many occasions; something I just wasn’t expecting from a Meat Loaf show.
There are some funny tongue-in-cheek segments that bring you into the next song which received a great response from the packed theatre with many people shouting out and getting very involved with the performers, all done with great fun.
The stage set was also very impressive with fantastic back drops portraying the Bat Out Of Hell album, they even had a Harley Davidson motorbike on stage and fifties style car front that gets used during the rock n roll song Paradise By The Dashboard Light.
The stand out moment for me is Steve’s rendition of For Crying Out Loud, a song which Meat Loaf by his own admission hasn’t done live for many years. Another stand out moment was a song that I hadn’t realised Meat Loaf had covered; the Celine Dion song It’s All Coming Back To Me Now performed by Charlotte Gallagher with a well-deserved standing ovation.
The finale blew the roof off with the whole cast belting out the song everybody wanted to hear, Bat Out Of Hell and by this time everybody was standing on their feet, hands high in the air and singing along with Steve who did, dare I say, better than Meat Loaf himself!
To summarise the night, this is the closet thing you will get to ever seeing Meat Loaf live and hear the music that you grew up listing to and for me sometimes better than the original! A must-see show.
